Women & Investing: Things You Need To Know

The earning power of women has never been greater.  But neither has the need to participate in a structured savings and investment plan. Why? First of all, a woman’s life expectancy is longer than a man’s so you’ll need a larger nest egg.

Women also have a lot of catching up to do.  A woman will generally spend less time in the workforce, staying at home to raise a family or care for an elderly parent. Over a lifetime, a woman will also earn less than a man - even if she works full time her entire working life. And because you’ll make less over the course of your career, your contributions to a 401K, and even Social Security, will be less.

The good news is that women are often better investors than men. Whereas men can be overly confident in their abilities, women won’t hesitate to ask for guidance. Women also do their homework when it comes to investing. So no matter where you are in life, take charge of your financial future and participate in an investment and savings plan.

  • Identify your life and financial goals. For example, at what age do you want to retire? What do you want to do in retirement?  Are there other personal goals you hope to achieve?

  • Determine how big your “nest egg” needs to be and outline steps to achieve it.

  • If you’re married, work with your husband and fine-tune your savings and retirement plan to meet your financial goals.

  • Don’t be afraid of risk - it’s part of a diversified portfolio.

  • Take advantage of a 401K at work and contribute as much as you’re allowed.

  • If you’re a stay-at-home mom, contribute to a tax-deferred Spousal IRA.
